Tips on hiring an interim
Hiring an interim is a cost-effective solution for businesses looking to fill a skills gap or complete a project in a short period of time. If you hadn’t guessed by the title, this blog looks at how to go about hiring an interim – so carry on reading if this is unchartered territory for your company, we’re happy to show you around…
1. Set expectations from the get-go
Before hiring an interim it’s essential you know what you want to get out of the process. Communicate these expectations early on to ensure everyone is on the same page. Start by providing a clear and coherent job description which sets out the role requirements, as well as the goals that need to be met and by when.
2. Decide on project length
Whether it’s a one-month jobbie or a year-long project, make sure you’re realistic when goal-setting. Again, it’s paramount that you communicate this timeline with your potential hire so that they can schedule in other contractual commitments etc.
3. Meet them!
Just like Tinder, it’s always best to meet the person on the other side of the screen (ideally in real life) before committing to anything. Invite your interim into the office so they can get a feel for the company culture, and you can decide whether they’d be a good fit.
4. Structure, structure, structure
When hiring a temporary member of staff, it is important to pre-determine where they will fit within the ‘hierarchy’ e.g. who will they report to? Who should they talk to if there’s an issue? Who will they be looking after? Having a clear structure in place will ensure your interim delivers on your expectations (and seamlessly).
