Tips for interims working over Christmas

Working on a project that runs over Christmas? Don’t worry, you can still enjoy the festivities! Carry on reading for our hand-picked top tips for interims working over Christmas.

Organise a virtual party

If you’re working from home, why not invite your colleagues to participate in a virtual Christmas party. This could be a quiz, a game or simply a catch up over a few drinks. Whatever you decide, this is a great way for remote interims to celebrate the festivities together and at little to no cost (depending on the bottle of wine you choose!).

Separate work and life

This advice is relevant all year round, but perhaps even more prominent over the Christmas season, but remember to switch off your laptop/emails/phone when you’re outside of work hours! When the boundary between work from home and being present with people you love at home are blurred then that’s where issues start to arise. Try creating a designated work space (such as the kitchen) so that your brain knows that when you leave that space, work mode is off. If possible, it is also a good idea to ask for a work laptop so you don’t find yourself slipping into work when you open your browser to watch Netflix.

Manage your time effectively

Take advantage of the occasions where you have a quiet house (i.e. early mornings) to get your work done without any distractions. You  might be able to enjoy an early finish if you don’t have any late afternoon meetings that day. Overall, planning ahead so you know when you’ll be at your busiest and when you’re free to relax is always a good idea.

Be kind to yourself

Christmas is a time to unplug from work and relax, but with increasing numbers of people working from home, it can be harder to ‘switch off’ without feeling guilty for resting. Don’t be hard on yourself this Christmas – take the time to unwind after a year of hard work and resist the temptation to open your emails when you’re watching The Grinch!
